The federal government and its partners hope to support the annual production of 1 billion gallons of drop in aviation biofuel by 2018. Southeast Partnership for Integrated Biomass Supply Systems (IBSS) led by the University of Tennessee is using switchgrass and woody biomass to produce butanol and aviation fuel.

Earlier, an existing coalbed methane well operated by El Paso Exploration & Production had been converted for CO 2 injection, and four wells drilled to monitor reservoir pressure, gas composition, water quality, and the CO 2 plume. The final phase, the development phase (2007–2018), will conduct large-volume carbon storage tests.

The two primary public transportation providers in Missoula, MUTD and ASUM-OT, are collaborating in the deployment of electric buses to advance agency goals to convert to clean vehicle technology. The City of Madison has a goal to convert the fleet to 50% electric by 2035.

Carbon fiber currently is produced by converting a carbon-containing polymer precursor fiber to pure carbon fiber through a carefully controlled series of heating and stretching steps.
