VeDeCoM Institue begins operation; focus on low-carbon connected vehicle systems

Recently, the France-based VeDeCoM Institute announced its operational launch as an Institut de la Transition Energétique (ITE - Energy Transition Institute) of the “Investment for the Future” program following the signing of an agreement with the French National Research Agency (ANR). VeDeCoM (Véhicule Décarboné Communiquant et sa Mobilité) is dedicated to car transport and individual mobility, the aim being to address three challenges: the need to reduce the energy impact and greenhouse gas emissions of vehicles; a major social shift in terms of user-vehicle relationships; and rapidly evolving information and communication technologies.
VeDeCoM aims to become a reference in three main fields:
Vehicle electrification in terms of electric and power electronic machines, reliability, integration and testing of electric energy sources (accumulators, batteries), thermal management, virtual design platforms and electromagnetic compatibility.
Driving delegation and connectivity of vehicles, with a focus on autonomous vehicles, secure and cooperative communication, safety and reliability of system architectures, and acceptability of these new vehicles by drivers and users on the basis of use scenarios and the appropriate regulatory context.
Shared mobility and energy relying on infrastructures and digital services addressing new usages to be explored (carpooling, car-sharing, automatic parking, multimodal transport).
VeDeCoM, formerly the Mov’eoTec foundation, is a partnership foundation of Versailles Saint-Quentin University, with another 9 founders: CETIM, ESIGELEC, ESTACA, IFP Energies Nouvelles, IFSTTAR, PSA Peugeot-Citroën, Renault, Safran and Valeo.
The 10 founders were joined by another 35 partners, including 12 associate donors sharing the same rights and duties in the governance of the Institute as the founders: ATOS, CEA, INRIA, Nexyad, ParisTech, Cergy-Pontoise University, UTAC-CERAM and Transdev, as well as the two urban communities of Versailles Grand Parc and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and the public institution Paris-Saclay.
The VeDeCoM ITE has a budget of €67 million (US$93 million) over the period 2014-2016 funded 54% by contributions from its members and external cooperation contracts; 34% by the French state, representing an initial allocation from the €54.5 million set aside as part of “Investment for the Future” program managed by the ANR; and 12% by the Yvelines Council, which may contribute €20 million over 10 years.
VeDeCoM brings together members from different industrial and service sectors (automotive industry, aviation, systems engineering, electronic components, ICT and digital simulation, infrastructure managers and transport operators, digital networks and electrical energy), several research and higher education bodies, and local authorities having agreed to collaborate in pre-competitive, pre-normative research, etc.
