Mitsubishi introduces 2014 Mirage with estimated 40 mpg US combined

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) unveiled the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door subcompact at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. Mitsubishi estimates that the new, non-hybrid Mirage, expected to go on sale in the fall, will achieve estimated fuel economy of 37 mpg city/44 mpg highway/40 mpg combined (6.4, 5.3 and 5.9 l/100 km, respectively) (CVT-equipped model).

Powering the Mirage is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder DOHC engine that features the latest version of Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) variable valve-timing system. This engine produces 74 bhp (55 kW) and 74 lb-ft (100 N·m) of torque. Consumers have a choice between a 5-speed manual and an advanced continuously-variable transmission (CVT) with Idle Neutral Logic.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage will be offered exclusively in a 5-door configuration with room for five passengers.

The Mirage is built using Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impact-absorbing safety cell technology. The patented RISE system utilizes a body structure with an impact energy-absorbing front end along with an abundant use of high tensile steel in key areas throughout the platform.

The 2014 Mirage has a 0.28 coefficient of drag. Standard electric power steering (EPS) further aids fuel efficiency.

This is even better fuel economy than the Civic Hybrid. I'm sure US manufacturers can do just as well...
