Las Vegas is better known for its excess than its frugality, but city bosses are turning that image around by trialling a fleet of electric cars, the first of which is GM's range-extended electric vehicle, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The trial will make the city the only government agency in the state to test electric vehicles.

This evening, the 2018 Nissan Leaf electric car will make its long-awaited debut at events in Tokyo, Las Vegas, and elsewhere around the world. The Leaf remains the world's highest-volume electric car, with more than 280,000 of the first-generation cars delivered since December 2011 (112,000 of those in the U.S.).

In 2011, Qualcomm had acquired the technology and other assets of HaloIPT, a leading provider of wireless charging technology for electric road vehicles. Earlier this year, Honda and WiTricity demonstrated their wireless vehicle-to-grid charging model at CES in Las Vegas, leveraging WiTricity’s DRIVE 11 wireless charging system.

The California Air Resources Board announced nearly $1 million in penalties against 3 companies for late or inaccurate reporting of their greenhouse gas emissions for 2011. Southwest Gas Corporation of Las Vegas, NV has agreed to pay $300,000 to resolve its late report regarding natural gas supplied to California for the year 2011.

The 2011 Fiat 500 will go on sale in less than six months, but the company is still hard at work roadtesting pre-production versions for North America. The latest proof is this photo of a Fiat 500 development prototype being road-tested outside Las Vegas, in the hot weather of Nevada.

and Las Vegas, Nev., UPS currently bases its 11 LNG tractors in Ontario, from which they can make the round trip to Las Vegas on one tank of fuel. UPS is working closely with the DOE’s Clean Cities program to construct a LNG fueling station in Las Vegas. along with UPS’s 11 existing LNG tractors.
