Another affordable EV set to land in Australia: SsangYong Torres EVX here late 2024

SsangYong Australia has announced it will launch its all-new Torres SUV in Australia this July, with the all-electric EVX model arriving a little later in the fourth quarter of 2024.

When it does arrive the rugged-looking SsangYong Torres EVX will be a logical rival for small affordable SUVs like the BYD Atto 3, the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Peugeot e-2008.

The Korean firm’s second EV, after the Korando e-Motion, is said to offer a range of around 500km thanks to its BYD-sourced 73.4kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery and have a starting price of around $50,000.

For now, just a single powertrain is available, a front-mounted electric motor that produces 150kW and 339Nm of torque.

All-wheel drive is off the menu but the front-wheel drive Torres EVX is claimed to be capable of a 0-100km/h dash of around 8.1 seconds.

Despite taking aim at small SUVs, the Torres EVX dimensions mean it’s actually at the larger end of the mid-size SUV segment, with the battery-powered Korean measuring in at 4715mm long, 1890mm wide and standing 1725mm tall.

That means the Torres EVX comes with a huge amounts of cargo room, offering as much as 839 litres of space behind the second row that, seats stowed, expands to 1662L.

As well as spacious, the new SsangYong SUV gets high-levels of standard equipment.

The entry ES bags 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, twin-12.3-inch displays, dual-zone climate control, faux leather heated and ventilated seats with eight-way power adjustment and adaptive cruise control.

The more luxurious E7, meanwhile, throws in 20-inch wheels, real leather, heated rear seats, illuminated kickplates and a digital key.

Local pricing will be released later in the year and by the time it arrives the Torres EVX and the rest of the Torres SUV range might be sold under the car-maker’s new KG Mobility branding.

The New Zealand business has already transitioned over to the name of its latest owner.
