Maybe I'll take a day off to go to A & P as well as Farwest Golf Carts to pick up some old 8V golf cart batteries for desulfation testing I've been mulling over some ideas for the past few days.

After much time on the phone with UPS Freight, the 8-volt golf cart batteries finally showed up today! Although the Bill of Lading clearly stated that this was a residence requiring a liftgate, UPS seemed to overlook that part of the order.

These high-capacity 8-volt golf-cart batteries are 70 pounds apiece. I got this battery strap at a Yamaha golf cart dealer. Tonight was an evening of heavy lifting. I'll definitely take some ibuprofen before tomorrow. Here are the batteries in the front box.

Above is a picture of a heavily sulfated 8-volt golf-cart battery I acquired yesterday. Can one revive a mostly dead battery? Several internet sources say yes. It had a floating voltage of 7.85 when I got it and needed half a gallon of distilled water to fill it back up.

The 8-volt golf cart batteries arrived over 24 days ago and have just been sitting on the garage floor, discharging. I'm a bit wiped from the initial burst of installing all the battery racks, so I took it a bit easier on Friday and Saturday to do some of the smaller installation steps.

The 914 AC kit uses 8V golf cart batteries and I'm wondering if different batteries like Hawkers or Optima Yellow-Top batteries would be better. After researching different battery types, it looks like the Hawkers and Optimas can put out more amps for more torque and are more rugged, but the golf-cart batteries still rule in terms of capacity per weight and size. Both US-Battery and Trojan have 8-volt golf-cart batteries.

I should be getting the 18 8-volt golf-cart batteries from American Battery Company early next week. As you may have noticed, the blog entries have dropped off rather abruptly in recent weeks. I've sent three e-mails and one phone call to Electro Automotive asking about the status of the battery racks/boxes and received no reply. As you might imagine, I'm a bit frustrated with this and don't really know what to do next.

I'm not sure how much current these golf cart batteries are designed for. Since traffic is really light on Sunday morning, I drove to work (15 miles away) and back to see how the 914 would handle. Shifting was a real pain on city streets since the electric motor changes RPM very quickly during acceleration or regeneration. The RPM stays constant when I "coast" unlike a gasoline engine which tends to slowly drift back to "idle."

Regarding the 8V golf-cart batteries, Mike also mentioned that they tended to either last 3-4 years or die right away (infant mortality). I just got off the phone with Mike at Electro Automotive. We chatted about the blown CCPower DC-DC converter and the engine vibrations. Since I fixed the DC-DC converter, we agreed that I would try to find out which conditions would cause it to blow again, if it does. It seems that Mike is more of a mechanical person than an electronics person.

Besides, the PowerCheq units only handle 12 volt batteries and the ElectroAuto kit is designed for 8-volt golf-cart batteries, so a homebrew system will be required. Over the past few weeks I've been trying to contact the folks at Electro Automotive to get the status of the EV 914 kit. They finally responded last night and apparently they're completely buried under the demand for EV conversion kits.
