held a line-off ceremony today for the Highlander SUV, produced on GTMC’s new production line at its plant in Nansha District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The China-produced Highlander has a 2009 sales target of 20,000 vehicles; the new line will eventually produce 160,000 units per year. Sales of the vehicle in China begin today.

GTMC was established in 2004 as a base for Toyota-brand vehicle production and sales in China. 2 opened with production of the Highlander in May 2009, followed by the Camry Hybrid in April 2010 and the E’Z in June 2011. (GAC), has produced more than 1 million vehicles since the start of production in 2006.

The second-generation Prius launched in the fall of 2003 as a 2004 model year. Two months later Toyota launched the Highlander Hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV). July 2007 saw the arrival of the second-generation 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV.

The all-new hybrid transaxle adopts improvements first used in previous post-2004 Toyota/Lexus hybrids such as the Camry hybrid, Highlander hybrid, and Lexus RX 400h, as well as refinements not previously employed. It has pushed several hybrid cars in the USA including the Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid, and a number of luxury hybrid vehicles through its Lexus brand. Toyota has now built a plug-in version of the Prius, which may again see the company beat its rivals to the punch on name value alone.
