The research grew out of two coring expeditions sponsored by the Nyanza Project in 2001 and 2004. Lake Tanganyika is bordered by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia—four of the poorest countries in the world, according to the United Nations Human Development Index.
