In the post-war era, it was the Volkswagen Beetle that initially shaped the automobile industry. The 25 millionth Volkswagen Golf left the assembly line in Wolfsburg in 2002, by 2013 the number had already risen to 30 million. Volkswagen was founded more than 80 years ago; since then, 150 million vehicles, including icons such as the Golf or the Beetle, have been built around the world at more than 50 production sites in 14 countries.

The German Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) and several industrial companies signed a joint Letter of Intent to expand the network of hydrogen filling stations in Germany from 15 to 50. As part of the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP), Germany’s federal government and industrial sector are investing more than €40 million (US$51 million) to expand the country’s network of hydrogen filling stations.

The KPMG research finds that the external environmental costs of 11 key industry sectors jumped 50% from US$566 to US$846 billion in 8 years (2002 to 2010), averaging a doubling of these costs every 14 years.

In other words, the authors note, these companies use these resources more efficiently than their industry peers. Volkswagen only managed to create significantly positive Sustainable Value in 2001, 2002 and 2007.

I had surmised this in my 2002 car design thesis [link] even before anyone was talking about plug in series hybrids. The federal government cant hand out money to a company thats telling them that itll lose money on a $40, 000 automobile that more than half the populace couldnt afford if the economy was in good shape! The big deal was that the oil industry saw real competition and persuaded GM to abandon the project and crush them all like cans.
