The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched the Cleaner Trucks Initiative (CTI) to further decrease NO x emissions from on-highway heavy-duty trucks and engines. It is estimated that heavy-duty trucks will be responsible for one-third of NO x emissions from the transportation sector in 2025.

The US EPA issued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) for the Cleaner Trucks Initiative (CTI). EPA last revised NO x standards for on-highway heavy-duty trucks and engines in January 2001. EPA is seeking input from the public and interested stakeholders. EPA intends to publish a proposed rule in early 2020.
