Study: tightening vehicle emissions standards resulted in higher rates of automaker non-compliance; unintended effects of threshold-based regulations

A new study focused on the auto industry finds that tightening emissions standards not only fails to curtail on-road emissions, but actually increases the likelihood of non-compliance by automakers. Our results suggest that in the absence of effective monitoring, tightening standards directly drives up automakers’ non-compliance.

DOE proposes revising procedures for calculating petroleum-equivalent fuel economy of EVs for use in CAFE calculations

DOE published a final rule on 12 June 2000. The PEF adopted by DOE in the 2000 Final Rule is based, in part, on the existing regulatory approach which provides procedures determining the petroleum-equivalent fuel economy of non-EV alternative fueled vehicles. DOE has not updated this since the June 2000 Final Rule.
