IOC to set up 10,000 EV charging stations in 3 years

Indian Oil Corporate (IOC) State-owned oil marketing company aims to install 10,000 charging stations for electric vehicles in the country over the next three years. IOC Chairman SM Vaidya said 2000 EV charging stations will be established in the next 12 months and another 8000 in the next two years to achieve the target of 10,000 EV charging stations in the next three years.

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) announced that it plans to set up two ethanol plants in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh at an investment of about ₹600 crores each. The company had received approvals from Telangana which suggested two locations for the ethanol plant. IOC is also planning a GW scale EV battery manufacturing plant, that will also be finalised soon.

Each plant will be having a manufacturing capacity of around 5 lakh litres of ethanol per day. It is to soon finalise plans for a GW scale EV battery manufacturing plant with the collaboration of an Israeli company. The battery made with aluminium will have the capability to run about 400 km. The IOC is also talking with OEMs regarding its battery plants.

The company at its petrol pumps will not only cater to petrol and diesel but also methanol, ethanol, CNG, LNG, battery-swapping services and electric vehicle charging facilities. As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, the company is taking many such initiatives which will be rolled out in a phased manner.

Indian oil plant in Haryana

The Indian oil is also setting up a plant in the Panipat district of Haryana for 100 KLPD (kilolitres per day) lignocellulosic 2G ethanol using the indigenous technology patented by the Indian Oil & R&D centre. This project costs Rs 766 crore which will promote the use of environment-friendly fuel. The company is also producing the 3G ethanol by converting the hydrogen off-gas produced at its refineries to ethanol, by gas fermentation technology.

Collaborations

IndianOil has collaborated with Tata Power, REIL, Power Grid Corporation, NTPC, Fortum, Hyundai, Tech Mahindra, BHEL and Ola for setting up EV chargers at its fuel stations. Besides IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) also announced plans to offer charging stations at around 7,000 petrol pumps over the next few years.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) in September had also announced plans to commission 5,000 charging stations over the next three years. It had 84 EV charging stations.

India’s leading research institute, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and the Research and Development Centre of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC) had announced their partnership to develop biomass gasification-based hydrogen generation technology to produce affordably priced fuel cell-grade hydrogen.

Setting up EV charging stations in a phased manner

IndianOil plans to set up the charging stations in a phased manner with the first 2,000 stations being set up within the year. At present, IndianOil has 448 EV charging stations and 30 battery swapping stations across the country.

In the first phase cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Surat and Pune will be focused on with 231 charging stations. State capitals, smart cities and major highways and expressways would be covered in a phased manner.
