A Breakthrough in EV Battery technology

Massless battery technology for electric vehicles

A group of researchers from the Chalmers University of Technology have developed a battery technology using carbon fibre which is ten times better than the battery technology which is currently being used in electric vehicles. The battery technology which they are claiming is told to be made completely of carbon fibre.

The special features:

The name itself tells us the purpose of this technology. The main objective of this technology is to reduce the weight of the battery pack i.e., massless battery. The use of this technology could probably increase not only safety but also the range of the vehicle since the weight of the battery pack is taken out from the overall vehicle weight.

The first attempt at this type of technology started back in 2007, but it has failed due to the difficulty in manufacturing these batteries.

The energy density of this battery is 24 WH/KG which is 20% capacity compared to present lithium-ion battery packs. This increases the safety rating of these massless batteries.

The stiffness of these battery packs is 25 GPA. This proves to us that it is as stronger as aluminium.

The previous type of battery packs concentrated either on good mechanical properties or good electrical properties but this massless carbon fiber battery has both good mechanical and electrical properties.

The positive electrode of this battery is made up of lithium iron phosphate- coated aluminium foil and the negative electrode is made up of carbon fibre.

The project is being financed by the Swedish national space agency, This new technology is further being enhanced which changes the positive electrode also to carbon fibre- coated aluminium foil. This enhanced massless carbon fiber battery is expected to be completed within two years.

The electric vehicle battery industry is currently focusing on Lightweight Multifunctional materials for the development of new battery technologies, we could see a significant improvement in the electric vehicle battery segment in the upcoming years.
