Plug In America joins global alliance

Last week, 37 electric vehicle (EV) driver associations from 26 countries, including Plug In America, joined forces to create the Global EV Drivers’ Alliance, building a worldwide EV community. The grassroots, non-profit organization collects best practices, inspiration, and information from EV driver associations and their members to help, inform, and inspire each other to accelerate electric mobility in their own regions/countries and worldwide.

The Alliance released this video to promote awareness of the Alliance.

“We are so excited to be joining with our international colleagues in the Global EV Drivers’ Alliance,” said Joel Levin, executive director of Plug In America. “While the United States has been a leader in electric mobility in many ways, we also lag behind several countries in EV market share. Sharing our experiences and learning from others puts all of us in a better position to push for clean electric vehicles in every country.”

Like Plug In America, the Alliance is calling for every new light-duty passenger vehicle sold in their countries to have a plug by 2030. This goal is achievable; with more EVs hitting the market and EV technology is rapidly improving, the future of EVs is here. In addition, the adoption of supportive policies will help boost the shift to electric transportation. For example, the market share for plug-in vehicles in Germany grew from 3% in 2019 to 13.5% in 2020, and the UK market went from 3.2% to 10.7% in the same period. By collaborating, sharing best practices, and ensuring EV drivers’ voices are heard in EV policy discussions worldwide, it’s possible to see rapid growth of EV sales globally. We can already see the EV growth; more than 3.24 million EVs were sold worldwide in 2020, compared to 2.6 million in 2019, despite the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying economic downturn.

One of the first joint activities of the Global EV Drivers’ Alliance will be participating in the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26, which will be held in Glasgow in November 2021. In connection with the event, associations connected with GEVA plan to organize events in their own countries and to organize a rally in Scotland to promote electromobility as an essential element in addressing climate change.

The Global EV Drivers’ Alliance represents organizations from the countries of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain (Catalonia), Croatia, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and United States. We hope to see other countries join us!
