GM has simplified the two-mode hybrid system for application in front-wheel drive vehicles—the Saturn VUE being the first instance ( earlier post )—while retaining its functionality and capability, according to Mark Selogie, Senior Manager Power Electronics, GM Powertrain, speaking at the SAE Hybrid Symposium in San Diego (11-12 Feb).

The Malibu hybrid shares components with two other GM mild hybrids: the Saturn Aura and Vue hybrids. GM’s next-generation mild hybrid system, which was announced in 2008 ( earlier post ), is scheduled to debut in MY 2011, powered by a lithium-ion battery from Hitachi Vehicle Energy Ltd (HVE). The competition challenges university engineering students across North America to re-engineer a 2009 Saturn VUE to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while retaining the vehicle’s performance and consumer appeal. The Ohio State’s design was powered by a 1.8-liter liter engine and fueled by E85 ethanol.

How Phoenix Motor Cars , which has been making the altfuel circuit with its AltairNano powered pickup, found itself on Bush's radar isn't clear. A123 Systems , a much larger company which is providing batteries to GM for possible use in the Vue and Volt, will be showing off a plug-in hybrid powered by its Lithium batteries.

The first, a Saturn Vue called the eMOOve, will be a series hybrid, to be completed in 2012. Bower says he hopes incorporating the RCCI engine technology into a vehicle will encourage industry leaders to adapt it for vehicles and even stationary power generators. One hurdle, though, will be the fuel infrastructure.

The objective of the project is to develop a high power and high energy electrical storage system that combines the strengths of each technology—high power density for ultracapacitors and high energy storage for Li-ion batteries—at equal or better system efficiency and net cost/density compared to current conventional Li-ion batteries.
