The US Department of Energy (DOE), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing, North America have launched a collaborative research effort on integrating plug-in electric vehicles into the power grid.

World supplies of the highly popular Toyota Prius hybrid could be further threatened by new electric power problems in Japan. The Japanese government requested on Friday, May 6, that the Hamaoka nuclear power plant system shut down all of its reactors, which supply to the central Japanese power grid.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), in cooperation with Duke Energy and non-profit industry initiative Energy Systems Network (ESN), will participate in a joint smart-grid pilot project in Indiana, the United States. The PHEV-10, similar to the Prius Plug-In ( earlier post ) has a larger battery pack than an HEV to allow 10 miles of driving powered by electricity only and a gasoline engine that drives the wheels in parallel with the electric motor when power demand is high or the batteries are discharged.
