Notes from the road: a guest post from Portland

Revenge of the Electric Car

As Portland, OR gears up for yet another screening of Revenge, local EV'er and filmmaker J Bills recounts the scene at the Portland premiere back in November: Here in Portland, we still talk about the last time Chris Paine rolled through town with a movie; an early screening of 2006’s seminal “Who Killed the Electric Car?”

Going to the Portland Better Living Show

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

I spent over seven hours on my feet at the Portland Better Living Show displaying the 914. Yesterday was a long day. My throat was hoarse at the end of the day from answering the same questions many times. Overall, people were very interested and I'm hoping a few will show up at the next OEVA meeting.

Anyone got a clutch?

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

Dennis from Driving Source NW was going to be in Portland the next day and was wonderful enough to deliver the clutch (and four CV joint gaskets in upper left of photo) to my house. I enjoyed talking about the conversion project with him and hearing about his own experiences with Porsches.

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

Since I live in Portland, Oregon, I went to a meeting with the Oregon Electric Vehicle Association and found out about several companies that provided drop-in electric conversion kits for existing cars. Shelling out Real Money

Open Source Civic EV Kit

I had the privilege of showing off the Porsche 914 at the kick-off meeting for the EV club in Longview, Washington. One person in Longview was gracious enough to take my vehicle back home to Portland on a trailer so I didn't have to sleep in the charging station parking lot to get a charge.

Balancing the Flywheel/Clutch

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

I took the flywheel and clutch pressure plate to Portland Engine Rebuilders. Many thanks to Alan at A&P Specialties (Audi and Porsche repair) for lending me a 1.7Liter 914 crankshaft so I could provide something for P.E.R. Okay, since I take Fridays off, this gives me a chance to take the flywheel into a machine shop for balancing.

Taking a Day off to see the EV Show

Porsche 914 EV Conversion

I took the day off to walk around Portland to the farmers market and EV awareness day with Krista. This was originally just a human powered vehicle made in Belgium, but the owner added an electric motor to power the rear third wheel to get up the hills in Portland (of which there aren't many in Belgium).
