A team of researchers at Penn State has developed a new, more environmentally friendly method of separating bitumen from oil sands utilizing ionic liquids (IL). The number of active rigs drilling for oil and gas fell by their most in two months, according to the latest data from oil services firm Baker Hughes. There were 19 oil rigs that were removed from operation as of Oct. There are now 1,590 active oil rigs, the lowest level in six weeks. 17, compared to the prior week.

US imports of Canadian crude oil rose to record levels during the first eight months of 2012, with Canada accounting for a growing share of total gross US imports, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Canada is the largest supplier of foreign oil to the United States, followed by Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Venezuela.
