By 2002, BYD had become one of the top four manufacturers worldwide - and the largest Chinese manufacturer - in each of the three rechargeable battery technologies (Li-Ion, NiCad, and NiMH), according to a Harvard Business School case study of the company. Some Americans, though, are eager to do business with BYD.

Not to be outdone, on Tuesday the Norwegian electric car startup, Think, was in Portland being wooed by the state as one of 8 potential places to site their first car manufacturing facility in the United States. Many of the first Prius hybrids that were released are still running strong on their NiMH batteries after 100,000+ miles.
