EV sales in India: Hero Electric, Tata Motors, BMW

The adoption of electric vehicles is increasing every day and the sales of EVs is also rising in India. For a few years, the EV industry is transformed a lot even the industry is not yet in a fully developed stage. India has witnessed electric vehicles sales three times in the first half of the ongoing fiscal. Read further to know more about EV sales in India.

EV sales in India

In the first half of FY22, EV sales have more than tripled to 1.18 lakh units which include 58,264 electric two-wheelers and 59,808 three-wheelers and the sales of ICE cars has lowered. According to the Centre for Energy Finance at Council on Energy, Environment and Water at Centre for Energy Finance (CEEW-CEF) until September, electric two-wheeler sales stood at 58,264 units and three-wheelers at 59,808 units. India has already sold 1.18 lakh EVs which is said to be 90% of the total sales last FY.

In the country’s capital, Delhi has also witnessed a rise in the sales of electric vehicles and it has surpassed the total number of registrations of CNG and hybrid-fuel vehicles in the city in recent months. The Delhi government had said that from July to September electric vehicles accounted for seven per cent of the total number of vehicles registered with the Delhi government’s transport department, while CNG vehicles accounted for six per cent.

Around 1.5 lakh vehicles registered including 7,869 electric vehicles, 6,857 CNG vehicles, 7,257 vehicles run on both CNG and petrol and 93,091 vehicles that run on petrol and diesel. Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said that they are witnessing good results of their EV policy and they are realising the dream to become EV capital achieving CM Arvind Kejriwal’s vision.

According to officials, nearly 23,000 electric vehicles were registered in Delhi from a period of August to October. The registered vehicles include 5,246 two-wheelers and 10,997 e-rickshaws. From July to September, 422 electric cars and four electric buses were registered. In the August-October period, the numbers grew to 1,415 electric cars and 30 buses.

Hero Electric

India’s leading and pioneer electric two-wheeler manufacturer Hero Electric has reported a growth in October as well. The company last month had made 6,366 unit sales of its high-speed electric scooters. But in the month of October, the company has made a sales record of 50,331 units in the ongoing fiscal.

Sohinder Gill, CEO of Hero Electric, said, “While we are happily celebrating the delivery of 50,000 bikes to the customers, we owe an apology to another 16,500 customers who are on the waitlist for deliveries and may have to wait for a few more weeks.”

Tata Motors 

Tata Motors with its Nexon EV and Tigor EV electric car has received great sales numbers. The automaker has registered its highest-ever monthly sales in October 2021 with 1,586 units sold. The company last month which is in September it has 1,078 units.

MG Motor 

While we were talking about the rise in the EVs sales till now, but here Morris Garages India has witnessed a decline of nearly 24 per cent. The company’s total sales stood at 2,863 units when compared to the same month in 2020 it had sales of 3,750 units. The company faced a decline due to the acute shortage of semiconductor chips worldwide which affected production.

But it had managed to record a 28 per cent growth in sales. The company sold 3,241 units in India in the month of September 2021. If we compare it to last year, September 2020 it retailed only 2,537 units. 

BMW 

BMW has also revealed the sales of its electrified vehicles which is said to be nearly doubled witnessing a growth of 98.9 per cent between January and September 2021. The company’s EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered a 43.1 per cent growth in sales year-on-year with 78,333 units sold.

A total of 59,688 pure electric vehicles has also been delivered to customers with the BMW Group witnessing a 121.4 per cent increase since the start of 2021.
