Maharashtra govt proposes to build a gigafactory for li-ion batteries

The state government of Maharashtra proposes to build a gigafactory for manufacturing advanced lithium-ion batteries as part of its revised electric vehicle policy. The government aims to electrify at least 10% of its new registered vehicles by 2025. The revised draft EV policy is awaiting to get the final approval from the state cabinet. 

Proposal for Gigafactory for li-ion batteries

It is also focused to develop charging infrastructure to encourage people to switch to cars and electric bikes. It also plans to install more than 2,300 charging stations in government buildings, MSRTC bus stops, in addition to gas pumps, shopping malls in the future.

Transport commissioner Avinash Dhakne said that there must be good and affordable infrastructure to encourage electric vehicles. The state transport ministry also emphasised developing charging infrastructure to encourage people to shift to electric cars and bikes by 2025.

Maharashtra new draft EV policy 2021

Recently, the State had announced the key highlights of the draft electric vehicles policy 2021. As per the draft electric vehicles policy, 2021 the Maharashtra government aims to ensure 10% of all newly registered vehicles in its major cities would be electric by 2025. It aims 10 per cent of two-wheelers, 20 per cent of three-wheelers and five per cent of four-wheelers newly registered at RTOs need to be electric vehicles.

According to the presentation made by Transport Commissioner Avinash Dhakne, the policy is mostly focused on all the urban agglomerations including Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Aurangabad, Pune, Nagpur.

“The State intends to make four highways and expressways fully EV ready by 2025 including the under-construction Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Express Highway, Mumbai-Nashik and Nashik-Pune,” said Mr Dhakne.

Apart from electric vehicles, city-wise targets of charging stations have been proposed as 1,500 for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, 500 for Pune, 150 for Nagpur, 100 for Nashik and 75 for Aurangabad.
