Of the 11 PHEVs: 10 are extended range electric vehicles—Toyota’s concept Prius PHEV is the only non-series hybrid plug-in. 9 (82%) are production prototypes or concepts; only the Fisker Karma and Karma-S are in production or near production. Of the 42 vehicles, 11 (26%) are plug-in hybrids, the remainder are EVs.

Stars and green cars are nothing new--several have admitted to owning Toyota Prius in the past, while others have been spotted in Tesla Roadsters or Fisker Karmas. At Global Green USA's 10th Pre-Oscar party on Wednesday, a host more stars were caught alongside two electric vehicles--the 2013 Chevrolet Volt and 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV.

Then there’s Toyota, with the plug-in Prius claiming maybe 20 mile AER. Kimberley told the FT that the Lotus effort will differ from the Telsa and ENVI in that it will utilize a gasoline engine hooked to a generator as a range extender — much like GM’s coming Chevrolet Volt and the Fisker Karma.

The Prius Prime becomes Toyota’s leader with a plug. Toyota’s Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrids are distinguished from the standard Prius and RAV4 and seem to have found a sales niche. That’s the Top 10, but the good news is there are even more models on the market and some have come and gone already.

Andy Frank makes the observation that parallel hybrids (Toyota Prius) are cheaper than series hybrids (Chevy Volt). The Chevy Volt is based around a series hybrid design and so is the Karma coming later this year from Fisker Automotive. It’ll be interesting to see how their vehicles compare to all the rest in terms of efficiency.
