Once again, a conference on plug-in cars. Coming on the heels of the Google/Brookings event in Washington, D.C., Plug-in 2008 in San Jose, California witnessed a noon-time address by new heavy-weight convert, Andy Grove, former CEO of Intel. I will pay nothing for my 300 mile road trip.)

Most of these advanced vehicles will be electric or plug-in hybrids. Advanced technology, prototype vehicles, and business plans are being developed by Google, car sharing services like Car2Go (Daimler), Uber, automakers, network providers, software and technology suppliers. Features are paving the way to self-driving cars.

The car is a “2” because it was preceded by the “1,” which is an electric performance plug-in hybrid GT, with a six-figure price tag and a limited output of 500 units per year over the next three years. There are already spaces in New York City and Los Angeles, and there are now two in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I’m located.
