Honda beat everybody to the production gasoline-electric hybrid game in the United States, putting the Insight in showrooms in 1999. Ford launched the Escape Hybrid as a 2005 model (its Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute siblings showed up a bit later), so The General had some catching up to do in the green-car department.

Many US drivers now have a vague idea that General Motors is doing something with electric vehicles. Just like, say, Ford—which was then in the process of killing Mercury, to leave it with only Ford and Lincoln. That would give the radically slimmed-down GM a mass-market brand and a luxury brand.

Other results included: Ford Fusion sales totaled 17,610, a July record and up 66% versus a year ago, and Mercury Milan sales were up 60%. On 27 July, Chrysler restarted production at 9 of its 11 manufacturing facilities.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China.
