IIHS says that the result demonstrates that automakers are using the same safety engineering in new electric cars as they do in gasoline-powered vehicles. The GEM and Whip belong to a class of golf cart-like vehicles that aren’t required to meet the same federal safety standards as passenger vehicles.

Various other companies are currently designing and developing fleets of fully electric emergency vehicles, including golf carts for police and ATVs for search-and-rescue operations. With rising gasoline prices, I believe the demand for freeway capable electric vehicles is going to increase over the next few years. While people can purchase neighborhood electric vehicles today for about $10K, they only have a top speed of 35 miles an hour or so, essentially glorified golf-carts.

The RPM stays constant when I "coast" unlike a gasoline engine which tends to slowly drift back to "idle." I'm not sure how much current these golf cart batteries are designed for. Shifting was a real pain on city streets since the electric motor changes RPM very quickly during acceleration or regeneration.

Light-duty diesel vehicles with 2009 MY or later compliant emissions if replacing gasoline powered vehicles and in conjunction with biodiesel fuel use. Marine applications and locomotives are not eligible under this FOA, nor are prototype or novelty vehicles, golf carts, snowmobiles and other off-road recreational or sport vehicles.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. The electric sofas and scooters were so much cooler - and quieter - than the gasoline powered stinkers that predominate.

The government sees environmental upsides and a chance for its car makers to gain ground on foreign rivals, since electric vehicles are simpler to engineer than gasoline-engine ones. Chinese auto makers also showed other types of "new energy" vehicles, including regular gasoline-electric hybrids to compete with Toyota Motor Corp.s
