Hybrid supercars are officially in fashion.
We've been positively inundated by the things over the last year or so, from BMW's upcoming i8 plug-in hybrid, to the exotic Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 and McLaren P1 trio, to this: The Acura NSX.
Like its historical namesake, it's the Acura destined to be one of the most accessible hybrid supercars, and to cement its motorsport-inspired reputation, Acura will debut the car at the Honda Indy 200 IndyCar Series race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
An NSX prototype will lap the Mid-Ohio course before the IndyCar open-wheeled racers take to the track, its special blue custom graphics hiding the NSX's final few production details.
What's clear even from Acura's sole picture is that the prototype NSX has changed little from the concept seen at last year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
While the details may still hold a few surprises in store, we largely know what to expect from the powertrain.
Like the original NSX, the new model uses a mid-mounted V-6 gasoline engine--only this time, Honda's three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) setup distributes electric and gasoline power as it sees fit.
We also know that this particular NSX is every bit as American as it is Japanese, with much of the design and engineering work shared between the two countries and production due to commence at the company's Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.
