GM announced that the first buyers of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability will be eligible for one of 4,400 free home charging stations. The program will provide Volt owners with a 240-volt charge station from either ECOtality, Inc. or Coulomb Technologies.

Purchasers of a Chevrolet Volt who qualify for EV Project participation in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston areas will receive a free home charger and credit toward the installation of the charger. The EV Project began last year, with grant funding through the US Department of Energy from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The 120 volt outlet and Level 1 charging equipment are often derided by EV advocates because of how long it will take to fully charge a BEV. But for those cars parked all-day or all night, a 120 volt outlet will often be the most cost-effective solution that also provides enough range for an average driver’s daily needs.

With the city budget constrained just as investment in EV charging infrastructure has become warranted, one would think the City would jump at the opportunity for seventeen n0-cost new units to serve LEAFs, Volts and Teslas now. These ClipperCreek chargers would be simple to use - just park and plug in.
