The three US electric vehicles (EVs) were the iconic GM EV1 , Chrysler TEVan , and the nearly forgotten Ford RangerEV , Ford used lead-acid batteries with the expected driving range of nearly 65 miles on warm, windless summer days. Optional were Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries, the same as those used in Toyota’s RAV4EV and Honda’s EV+.

One point of interest is that GM and Cobasys are forsaking the technology that could provide plug-in hybrids in the shortest time - the Nickel Metal Hydride battery for which Cobasys holds the patents and GM used in its 140-mile range EV1. Asked why not Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the Volt, at least to start, he says "NiMH just doesn't do it." Interestingly, Lutz says GM is being approached by NiMH manufacturers to use this proven battery chemistry in the Volt. And if Lithium proves problematic, he says GM will again consider NiMH. But hold on.

Hell, they could simply sell the few EV1s they still have running around. They could encourage museums and universities with donated, disabled EV1s to rebuild them as electric cars and allow them on the roads.
