Ford is recalling certain models of its 2005-2008 Ford Escape Hybrid and 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid crossover utility vehicles to fix a cooling issue.

The recall will replace faulty Motor Electronics Coolant Pumps in approximately 70,209 vehicles. The pump cools electronics related to the operation of the hybrid powertrain.

In the affected vehicles, the pump may fail, causing the electronics to overheat. This may cause an affected Escape Hybrid or Mariner Hybrid to completely shut down while being driven.

Ford dealers will inspect the coolant pump, and replace it if necessary, free of charge. This is expected to begin October 27, but owners will be notified of the exact date.
