Hydro-Québec has joined a Ford-EPRI North America-wide demonstration and research program on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). EPRI has identified nine utilities across North America to test drive the vehicles and collect data on battery technology, vehicle systems, customer use and grid infrastructure. Earlier post.).

Johnson Controls will supply Lithium-ion batteries to power large plug-in hybrid trucks as part of a U.S. Odyne, in conjunction with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the South Coast Air Quality Management District of California, has been selected to participate in a $45 million dollar DOE grant.

Ford has into a partnership with Johnson Controls-Saft (JCS) to develop advanced lithium-ion battery system to power Ford’s first production plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) beginning in 2012. Ford’s current demonstration fleet of Escape plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) is using JCS Li-ion packs. Earlier post.).

Here's one of the announcements that came out of the conference : EPRI, GM, 34 Utilities Collaborate to Advance Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles PALO ALTO, Calif. Additionally, research released last year by EPRI and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) pointed to the potential of PHEVs to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

SDG&E tested the performance of two 2007-model Prius hybrids and then converted them into plug-in hybrids, using a Hymotion 5 kWh lithium-ion battery conversion kit. The converted plug-in hybrids recharge their batteries through a standard 110-volt household outlet and charge in five to six hours for a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery.

A study by EPRI , the California Air Resources Board, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and others (5.3MB PDF) concluded that plug-in hybrids produced substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions than either conventional gasoline cars or unplugged hybrids.
