Tesla requests PM Modi to cut import taxes on electric vehicles

Tesla Inc urged the Prime Minister’s Office to cut down the import taxes on electric vehicles before it enters the market. Tesla wants to start selling imported cars in India this year but it says taxes in India is very high among the highest in the world. In July it requests tax cuts and prompted objections from several local players who said that it would discourage investment in domestic manufacturing.

India levies an import responsibility of 60 per cent on electrical autos that price $40,000 or much less, and 100 per cent responsibility on these priced over $40,000. Tesla has individually additionally put in a request for a gathering between its Chief Government Elon Musk and PM Modi. As the analysts stated that at these charges Tesla vehicles would turn far too pricey for patrons and will restrict their gross sales.

The transport minister stated this month that Tesla mustn’t promote Chinese language vehicles made in India and as alternative manufacture domestically, however, Tesla has indicated it needs to experiment with first imports. Musk stated on Twitter in July that “if Tesla is ready to succeed with imported automobiles, it’s prone to have a manufacturing unit in India.”

Earlier in September Tesla had received its approval to make or import its vehicle variants in India from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that Tesla’s vehicles are certified for safe and roadworthiness in India. Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y variants might be coming to India.

The Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has passed the buck on to the EV makers to ensure buyers get ‘significant discount’ while making the switch from ICE vehicles to electric cars. Amid debate whether the Centre should accept Tesla’s demand to bring down import duties on electric vehicles to make them more affordable.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has said, “EV manufacturers should offer a significant discount to EV buyers who scrapped their old IC engine cars.”

The Tesla Model Y sales have topped in August with 790 registrations within less than a week since its arrival. Tesla had started its Model Y invasion in Europe with its first deliveries in several EU territories, including Germany, Belgium, and Norway.

The Tesla Model 3 had reached 1,031,588 worldwide deliveries at the end of the 2nd quarter of 2021. The Model 3 is the first electric car to pass 1 million cumulative sales. Whereas the Tesla Model Y had 250,000 cumulative sales in July and it may reach 500,000 by the end of the year.
