Well, now we've driven a prototype of the 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid that Toyota will sell in the U.S. What's it like? It's just like driving a standard Toyota Prius hybrid. Only more so. The 2012 Plug-In will be the first Toyota that can be plugged into the electric grid to recharge its battery pack since it sold several hundred RAV4e electric.

The Nikkei reports that Toyota Motor Corp. will introduce a new Prius minivan equipped with Li-ion batteries early next year—the first of a coming rollout of hybrids equipped with Li-ion packs. The new Prius minivan, slated for release in early 2011, will offer a spacious interior and improved fuel economy by taking advantage of the lithium ion battery’s compact size and light weight.

Remy International will supply HVH250 electric motors ( earlier post ) for Aptera Motors’s Aptera 2e electric vehicle. ConocoPhillips has entered into definitive agreements with subsidiaries of China-based Sinopec International Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (SIPC) to sell its 9.03% interest in Syncrude for $4.65 billion. The transaction is anticipated to close in the third quarter of 2010 once Canadian and Chinese government approvals are obtained. The next generation of Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline engines will introduce cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), enabling higher compression ratios, according to Ford executives speaking at the SAE 2010 World Congress in Detroit. Cooled EGR as applied to an EcoBoost engine can improve efficiency, reduce the tendency for an engine to knock, and reduce PM emissions (which can be an issue with gasoline direct injection engines).

The Nikkei reports that Honda Motor Co. is developing a battery-electric scooter powered by a Toshiba Li-ion battery, with the release likely to come in December. The prototype is comparable in power and size to a 50 cc scooter. Details are expected on Tuesday. The electric motorbike will get about 30km [18.6 miles] per charge.
