For the second year in a row, the student team from Laval University in Quebec, Canada took home the grand prize at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas, taking top place in the 2010 competition with 2,487.5 miles per gallon US (0.095 L/100km) in the “Prototype” category. And in the “UrbanConcept” category, the team from Mater Dei High School in Evansville, Indiana took the grand prize for the second year in a row by achieving 437.2 mpg US (0.538 L/100km).

An explosion and fire at a Washington state oil refinery shook homes and shot flames into the night sky early Friday, killing five people and critically injuring two others. The blast was the biggest fatal refinery accident since a 2005 explosion at a BP American refinery in Texas killed 15 people and injured another 170, authorities said. The state of Washington fined Tesoro $85,700 a year ago after an inspection found 17 serious safety and health violations at the Anacortes refinery.

A motorist today died today after his car caught fire on a petrol station forecourt, police said. Firefighters said the "flash" fire had been contained inside the car and no-one else was hurt. Air Products has signed a contract with SK Energy to construct a hydrogen fueling station for a novel energy project to be based in World Cup Park in Seoul, South Korea. The hydrogen fueling station to be onstream in July 2010 will supply hydrogen produced solely from landfill gas to fuel a fleet of vehicles. The project is part of Seoul’s push to use alternative supply means to generate 10% of its energy consumption by 2020, and to use hydrogen for 30% of the switch.

The trend started in Europe, and now every car make seems to have a green sub-brand. For a while, Chevy used the "XFE" label, but its highest-mileage 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is to be called the Eco. The EPA hasn't released final gas-mileage figures, but Chevrolet expects the 2011 Cruze Eco to be rated at 40 miles per gallon, on the highway cycle.
