Chrysler will use a new EcoDiesel badge to distinguish its upcoming range of clean diesel vehicles, set for roll-out over the next few years.
Coming straight from the United States Patent and Trademark office, the new badge will make its first appearance on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, when that model receives a new 3.0-liter diesel for the 2014 model year.
The new diesel Grand Cherokee, using an engine already in use in Europe, is expected to go on sale in January 2013.
The 3.0-liter, turbocharged diesel develops 241 horsepower and 406 pounds-feet of torque, and in its current application is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. An eight-speed auto is rumored, but it's unclear whether the diesel will use this transmission.
The EcoDiesel engine should allow the Grand Cherokee to achieve up to 33 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg city, with the five-speed.
That will give it better highway mileage, though marginally worse city figures, than some of the hybrid options available in the class--though it's set to be significantly better than most gasoline equivalents.
The trademarked logo, featuring the words "ECO" and "DIESEL" interlocked, together with a leaf motif and the 3.0-liter engine capacity, is expected to feature on other vehicles, including a diesel version of the Chrysler 300.
