You know a car is ready for the road when its online configurator goes live.

For the Porsche 918 Spyder, it has been a long journey from the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, where the plug-in hybrid hypercar was first shown as a concept, to the start of production on September 18.

While most people probably can't afford the $845,000 Spyder, everyone can at least fantasize about owning one--or at least specifying out your very own model--by using the configurator.

Who wouldn't relish debating whether it looks better in Guards Red or Meteor Gray Metallic?

Wannabe Porsche owners can try out different wheels and interior trim packages.

There are also a few options, including a fire extinguisher, to evaluate. Oh, and 918 buyers can pick their cars up at the factory in Germany if desired.

A trip to Germany would seem to offer the perfect opportunity to try to match the 918's 6:57 Nürburgring lap, which stands as a record for production cars.

Making that lap time possible are a 4.6-liter V-8 plus two electric motors powered by a 6.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. Total powertrain output is 887 horsepower and 940 pound-feet of torque.

The 918 will do 0 to 60 mph in just under 2.8 seconds, but has also been rated at 78 mpg on the European combined cycle, according to Porsche.

Only 918 examples of this technological marvel will be built. If you're interested, Porsche reportedly still has a few slots open.

Meanwhile, check out the configurator along with our 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show live gallery of the 918 Spyder.
