BioMara researchers identify two strains of marine algae with dry-weight oil content >50%

Green Car Congress

Researchers in the BioMara (Sustainable Fuels from Marine Biomass) project, report identifying two strains of marine algae— Nannochloropis oceanica and Chlorella vulgaris , which have a dry-weight oil content of more than 50%. An open access paper on the screening for oleaginous marine algae is published in Nature’s Scientific Reports. In order to produce biofuels from micro-algae we will have to generate high yields, so we need to know which strains will produce the most oil.

BMW i3: How Far Can You Go Without Touching The Brake Pedal?

Green Car Reports

The regenerative braking system in the BMW i3 electric car is quite extreme. If you plan ahead and allow enough stopping distance, by lifting off the accelerator, this little electric car will come to a complete stop, without ever requiring a touch of the brake pedal. That behavior recently led Britain’s Auto Express to put that to the.

Navigant expects global market for automotive Li-ion batteries to hit $30.6 billion in 2024; almost 4x 2015 market

Green Car Congress

In a new report, Navigant Research forecasts the global market for Li-ion batteries in light duty and medium/heavy duty vehicles will almost quadruple from $7.8 billion in 2015 to $30.6 billion in 2024. This figure could be higher if emerging 48V micro-hybrid technology delivers on its promise of fuel efficiency at a low cost increment and a significant number of OEMs choose to implement it with Li-ion battery packs, Navigant said.

Cadillac Confirms It Will Bring Diesels Back To The U.S.

Green Car Reports

Currently, several German luxury automakers--including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche--offer diesel models in the U.S. But except for one disastrous experiment decades ago, Cadillac has shied away from diesels in domestically-sold models. That attitude seems to be changing though.

Life Cycle Associates offering T1E emulator of Tier 1 CA_GREET2 model for LCFS calculations

Green Car Congress

Life Cycle Associates has developed the T1E tool to help with California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) calculations. T1E is an emulator of the Tier 1 CA_GREET2 model which helps biofuel producers provide a verification of carbon intensity (CI) calculations. T1E provides the CI for an individual facility in a reduced file size. The inputs are limited to only those inputs applying to the individual facility, which reduces the potential for input error.

PNNL study of metabolic processes paves way to optimize lipids production in yeast Y. lipolytica

Green Car Congress

Lipid-derived biofuels have been proposed as a promising substitute for fossil fuels. The oleaginous ascomycete (sac fungus) yeast Yarrowia lipolytica accumulates large amounts of lipids and has potential as a biofuel producing organism; however, little is known about the key biological processes involved. To address this gap in knowledge, a recent study by a team from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) identified and characterized major pathways involved in lipid accumulation from
