Plug-in hybrid operating modes with the 2MH4EV architecture. GM has developed a prototype of its two-mode front-wheel drive (FWD) hybrid transmission ( earlier post ) with enhanced electric vehicle capability (2MH4EV) for application in a plug-in hybrid; GM presented a paper detailing the work at the SAE 2011 World Congress in Detroit.

In early November, an LA Times story heralding GM’s resurrection of the plug-in car was carried by newspapers worldwide. GM announced it will show some sort of plug-in car at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Speculation has focused on the possibility of a serial plug-in hybrid.

Among the Detroit Three automakers, General Motors has a quarter of a century of electric-car experience, from the legendary EV1 to the 238-mile Chevrolet Bolt EV. Ford launched hybrids in 2004, before any other maker, but its battery-electric efforts thus far have been strictly compliance cars.
