KSRTC allows transportation of electric scooters & bicycles, reduces ticket charges 

Transport Minister Antony Raju said that KSRTC will reduce bus fares from next month. The passengers can carry electric bikes and scooters and bicycles in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses. The Minister said that the measures to make this a reality are in full swing. The KSRTC long route low-floor busses and Scania and Volvo busses to Bengaluru will have the facility.

This decision has been taken to reduce the ticket rates from October 1 as due to the Covid outbreak the ticket charges were hiked to overcome the financial crisis.

In 2019, the Kerala government had announced that it has introduced 1 million EVs by 2022. The Kerala Government targets 10 million EVs on roads. The newly registered private EVs will get a tax refund. To develop e-mobility Rs 12 crore has been given as ‘e-mobility fund,’ which is used for the tax subsidy to 10,000 electric autos.

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had issued a tender to lease 1,500 electric buses. The tender will be issued in three different tenders of 500 (500*3)electric buses for a duration of 10 years.

50% reduction in motor vehicle tax 

Kerala’s Finance Minister Thomas Isaac had announced in January this year, that a 50% reduction in motor vehicle tax for electric, fuel cell, and full hybrid battery electric vehicles (EV) for five years in the state’s budget for 2021-2022. About 2,000 EVs have been registered in the state. This policy encourages the adoption of more such vehicles, the Minister said.

Isaac said Kerala Automobiles Limited had started the production and export of electric rickshaws. A subsidy of ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 would be provided for the first 10,000 units. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) plans to install 236 electric vehicle charging stations in 2021-22. It is also planning to deploy EVs for use by government officials and agencies.

He also said that the 3,000 of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation’s diesel engine vehicles will be converted to liquified natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG)-based engines. The Kerala Finance Corporation will provide loans to purchase electric cars at an interest rate of 7%. It will also provide loans at 10% to convert diesel buses to LNG or CNG.
