Ford has into a partnership with Johnson Controls-Saft (JCS) to develop advanced lithium-ion battery system to power Ford’s first production plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) beginning in 2012. The five-year supply agreement includes delivery for committed production in 2012 with a target of at least 5,000 units per year.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. This is from "Commercializing Plug-In Hybrids" (pdf), the current CalCars 24-slide presentation about PHEVs available along with other documents at CalCars Downloads. 1,000 pre-orders for small production runs in 2009 and 2010starting 4th quarter 2009.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) estimates that the current power grid could handle many tens of millions of cars plugging in at off-peak hours before wed have any capacity issues [See EPRI article PDF ].
