Need a pickup truck but don't want to see your wages burned away at the gas station? A diesel truck could be just what you need.
Chevrolet will be latest to offer such an option when it equips the 2015 Colorado mid-size pickup with a diesel engine.
When the Colorado arrives next year, the range will feature a 193-horsepower four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 302-horse 3.6-liter V-6. Each is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, though four-wheel drive will be an option.
Colorados will be able to tow up to 6,700 pounds. An extended cab model will be the base configuration, with a crew-cab body also available. A maximum six-foot bed will be available on either model.
By late 2015, our sister site The Car Connection reports, a third unit will join the Colorado range--a 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder diesel.
Given the Colorado's modest size and the lack of rival diesels in this class of truck, it stands a good chance of being the most fuel-efficient pickup on the market--though no EPA fuel economy figures have been released for any of the upcoming Colorado range.
The Colorado will compete with trucks like the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. The most efficient of these, the 2.7-liter, four-cylinder Tacoma, manages just 23 mpg on the EPA combined cycle.
Diesel truck fans currently have to look to bigger vehicles to get their fix--such as the recently-announced 2014 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel or Nissan Titan turbodiesel. Elsewhere, you have to look to heavy duty trucks. That's sure to make Chevy's new offering a popular choice for buyers who don't really need a full-sized or heavy-duty truck to meet their daily needs.
