Photos First drive: Chevy Volt test A few laps behind the wheel of an early version of GMs electric car shows the strengths - and possible weaknesses - of the technology. While Chrysler has still not officially announced any of these details, the carmakers viability plan listed an "EV Roadster" as a future product for 2010.

As the major automakers race to put electric vehicles into showrooms, they are spending money like it’s going out of fashion. According to reports, General Motors has splashed out around $1billion developing the Chevrolet Volt, while Chrysler hopes to invest around $448million in its electric vehicle programme.

A number of other plug-in hybrids, including models from GM, Chrysler, and Toyota, are scheduled to come out in the next few years. JD Power estimates that Tesla will sell 500 to 800 cars next year, while Fisker Automotive is expected to sell more than 10,000. [1]
