ARAI develops fast chargers for electric vehicles in India

The ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) announced that it is working on developing fast chargers for electric vehicles in India said Heavy Industries Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey.

It has already developed a prototype product and is expected to be completed by October 2022, it said at a press conference on the sidelines of the ‘Round Table To Promote Electric Mobility’ event organised by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The government wants to install the EV charging chargers by December 2022. The fast-charging solutions are the most required for the adoption of electric vehicles in India.

The current standard for a “fast charger” is one that offers 50kW of DC charging, while certain developed nations are already aiming for a charge rate of up to 150kW. The Ministry of Heavy Industries to install EV chargers at 22,000 out of an estimated total of 70,000 petrol pumps across India.

Recently, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has developed a charger for electric vehicles to boost the adoption of electric vehicles in India. The ARAI said that electric vehicle charging infrastructure is very important for the development of electric vehicles as the chargers are imported and the association will focus on developing these chargers at an affordable price.

ARAI recently signed an MoU with Bharat Electronics Limited for EV chargers. As per the partnership, the ARAI will provide complete know-how of the charges and Bharat Electronics will manufacturer them. These chargers will cost from the range of ₹50,000-60,000. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant System) vehicles and cylinder testing centres need dedicated space and ARAI is setting up a new centre in Takwe.
