Chinese university develops new material to increase solid-state battery production

The University of Science and Technology of China team has developed a new material that can potentially help to reduce the cost of the production of solid-state lithium batteries and accelerate their commercialization into EVs.The new material such as lithium zirconium chloride offers less cost material and the required performance. Read further to know more about solid-state battery production.

Solid-state battery production

Solid-state batteries is been in experiments for many years and there are several other breakthroughs with different materials such as electrolytes, and cathodes. The biggest barrier for solid-state batteries is the means of cost-effective mass production and the competition with lithium-ion batteries. In 2017 the Fisker Inc. has announced a solid-state battery that is capable of one-minute charging but it has ended the project.

Hitachi Zosen a major Japanese industrial and engineering corporation has developed a solid-state battery. This new solid-state battery can be operated under a larger range of temperatures. The battery will soon be tested in industrial machinery and space.

This solid-state high-performance battery is unveiled at an exhibition in Tokyo. It has a capacity of 1,000 milliamp hours which is said to have roughly seven times as much as the Japanese company’s prior models. Its unique feature is that it can be operated even in the temperature range from 100 degrees to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

The battery assures a lower risk of fires due to its solid electrolyte and provides more enhanced energy efficiency than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries are considered to be the next-generation source of power.
