The SMUD (2020 Sacramento Municipal Utility District) Board of Directors adopted a climate emergency declaration that commits to working toward an ambitious goal of delivering carbon-neutral electricity by 2030. Furthermore, SMUD has reduced the carbon intensity of its power mix, which is now 50% carbon-free on average.

The California Energy Commission approved its first $10 million to fund Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) research and development (R&D) projects during its monthly business meeting today. The California Energy Commission unanimously approved funding of $35,031,310 to projects that will accelerate the development of green fuels and technology in California. The project, located at the Port of West Sacramento, is expected to create 20 permanent jobs and an additional 30 during construction. SacPort Biofuels Corp.

Arun Raju, director of the Center for Renewable Natural Gas at UC Riverside, recently received a $146,000 grant from Southern California Gas Co. However, discussions also are underway in Sacramento to further tighten those requirements to 50% as early as 2025 and 100% by 2045.

The California Energy Commission has awarded $1,585,490 to spur research on projects including a solid-state Li-ion battery system for grid-scale energy storage. University of California at San Diego will receive $95,000 to reduce the cost of biomass power generation by removing tar from the producer gas in the gasifier.
