Many people have an exaggerated perception of the fire risks of EVs because they use lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries produce harmful fluoride gas when on fire, burn for longer, and are more difficult to put out than fossil-fueled fires. Don’t worry about dodging puddles in your Prius!

Regardless, once the $7,500 tax credit is accounted for, and the much lower maintenance costs, these should be about the same as buying a gas car, only the fuel will be less than a dollar a gallon equivalent. Buying one of these will cost about half what the Tesla Model S will cost and you can get it a full year earlier.

The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid. The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model. The plug-in Prius is expected to launch sometime in 2010.
