I was originally thinking of selling my car and buying something even more economical but the car already got 26mpg commuting to work. So even doubling my mileage just didn't make up for the cost of a new Prius for example vs how much it would cost to convert my current car and how quickly I could recoup that investment.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0"

Duh, heres our $40K volt, buy it please? If you just set aside the fantasy goal of an electric car with the same or better performance than an ICE powered car then we could build utilitarian short range EVs now, and could have been doing this coninually since 1900 with lead-acid batteries. I’m sick of hearing about the Prius….I

And we all won’t be driving a Prius either – I’ll have my electric pickup truck in a few years too. Lithium, nickel metal hydrides and even advanced lead acid products are now capable of great energy storage and have strong recycle lives. Battery technologies are advancing rapidly.
