The EV ecosystem consists of many dependencies, requiring the coming together of manufacturers, consumers, governments, utilities, software vendors, etc. Coordinating everyone’s interests requires major efforts. That’s where EV industry associations come in. They bring together visionary like minded individuals, companies, and NGOs to build the future of eMobility.

Common goals include speeding the development of industry standards, deployment of sufficient EV charging infrastructure and passing legislation favorable to the EV market – ranging from changes in the way utilities can price electricity to requiring that charge points need to be integrated into public building projects.

The organizations’ annual conferences and webinars promote information sharing among eMobility leaders to drive the industry forward. They also focus on educating the public about the benefits of electric vehicle adoption, promoting the eMobility industry as a whole as well as their individual organizations’ agendas.

The main trade associations driving progress in the eMobility industry include:

The World Electric Vehicle Association (WEVA), which has been around since 1990, promotes the research, development, and deployment of electric mobility. The association consists of three regional organizations – the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA), the European Association for Electromobility (AVERE) and the Electric Vehicle Association of Asia Pacific (EVAAP). They focus on uniting the industry toward the common goals of education and growth, so they organize the International Electric Vehicle Symposium and bestow the E-Visionary Award to cities leading the charge for electric vehicle adoption.  WEVA publishes the World Electric Vehicle Journal, a peer-reviewed international scientific journal that covers all studies related to battery, hybrid, and fuel cell electric vehicles comprehensively.

The Electric Vehicle Charging Association lobbies for the legislative and regulatory changes needed in the United States to support increased EV charging deployment. Their work advances the goal of a clean transportation system in which market forces drive adoption of electric vehicles and deployment of the EV charging infrastructure.

New call-to-action

The United Kingdom’s Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) consists of more than 550 members within the heat, transport, power, EV charging infrastructure and the circular economy (eliminating waste and the continuous use of renewable resources) industries. The group works toward achievement of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in the United Kingdom by participating in industry groups and advisory panels focused on policy and regulations. They focus efforts across a range of activities, including bio-waste recycling, the built environment, the circular economy, green recovery, decarbonizing heat, power, and transportation, among others. They want to increase the market for EVs, but with a sustainable approach– reducing carbon intensity, improving air quality, and balancing load management on the power grid. REA hosts an annual EV conference focusing on how consumers will engage with the EV sector. REA recently merged with the UK Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Association (UKEVSE).

Avere, the European Association for Electromobility, with membership across 19 countries, promotes electromobility and sustainable transport across Europe, advocating on behalf of the industry, academia, and EV users on the EU and national levels. The 1,000-member group includes SMEs, auto-makers, consumers, NGOs, R&D centers, manufacturers, and other electromobility-interested parties. Beyond advocacy, AVERE encourages the exchange of knowledge, experience, and ideas across its member groups.

The Electric Drive Transportation Association focuses on advancing mobility with electric innovation. They promote battery and fuel cell development and hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as electric drive technologies and infrastructure. Membership ranges from vehicle and component manufacturers to utilities and EV charging infrastructure providers, as well other stakeholders. They conduct public policy advocacy and promote EV education and awareness.

CharIn Global is focused on strengthening interoperability by promoting the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard and certification for charging all types of EVs. Taking a holistic approach, it wants to ensure that private and commercial vehicles – from cars to trucks to planes to ships – can all be served by the same Megawatt Charging System standard.

Another organization focused on reinforcing industry standards is the Open Charge Alliance, which promotes the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) and the Open Smart Charging Protocol (OSCP). OCPP strengthens EV charging hardware management, improves transaction handling, reinforces security, ensures better driver communication, and allows for smart EV charging functionality, among others. OSCP communicates local available capacity to both EV charging station operators (CPOS) and the power distribution system operator. Organization members include major players across the entire EV industry – utilities, manufacturers, and a range of eMobility providers.

Driivz was one of the first companies to be formally certified for OCPP 1.6 by the Open Charge Alliance and to implement OCPP 1.6. Driivz is the golden node of choice for the upcoming OCPP 2.0.1 certification.

Why Get Involved

Trade associations ensure that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. They unite the power of the individual with that of the group to take a more active role in promoting the future of electric vehicles and the eMobility industry.

While each association is focused on achieving a specific aspect of driving eMobility forward, the combined efforts of these organizations and others like them ensure that the eMobility infrastructure is strengthened across all facets – regulatory, consumer, manufacturing, the grid, and EV charging service providers.  – ensuring the move to electrified transportation occurs not only rapidly but also sustainably and profitably.
