In a post on Toyota’s Open Road blog, Irv Miller, Toyota Group Vice President – Environmental and Public Affairs, wrote that contrary to some recent reports, Toyota has yet to offer mileage estimates on its plug-in hybrid technology. They are very early “converted” prototypes using double nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Last year Oregon had also aggressively negotiated with the Chinese carmaker, BYD , to manufacture its line of plug-in hybrids in the state for sale in the U.S.) Ted Kulongoski behind the wheel of Nissan’s prototype electric vehicle. Mr. Kulongoski wants to make Oregon the go-to state for electric vehicle production.

Though 12 miles is well short of the 40 plus miles of the upcoming Chevy Volt, the costs associated with the hybrid system should also fall well short of the Volts costly power train. The plug-in Prius is a separate model from the all new 2010 Prius Hybrid. The plug-in Prius is expected to launch sometime in 2010.

With my pal, Brad Bartz, of ABC Solar forcing the City of Torrance to back down and stop breaking the state solar rights law, With the growing numbers of electric cars and plug-in cars headed our way and the price of oil hitting $71 a barrel yesterday. That’s certainly the case here in Torrance, California where I live and work.
