The first time may have been a Pyrrhic victory. In April, an updated 90D emerged with a kinda, sorta 300-mile range and a new face.

Tuesday, Tesla announced that a new 100-kilowatt-hour battery would deliver 315 miles on the EPA cycle and accelerate up to 60 mph faster than falling off the roof when equipped with Ludicrous mode. (About 2.5 seconds, to be exact.)

This thing wins, hands down.

Customers waiting on their 2016 Tesla Model S P90D Ludicrous can upgrade to the 100-kwh pack for an added $10,000, and the Model S P100D starts at $134,500 after tax breaks.

Existing P90D owners can have their cars upgraded to the bigger battery, but that will cost $20,000 more—$10,000 goes toward recycling the existing battery.

The larger battery pack is also available on the 2016 Tesla Model X and increases the SUV's range up to 289 miles and drops its 0-60 mph time to 2.9 seconds—or roughly about the same as a 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo. The Model X P100D starts at $135,500 after federal rebates.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk pointed out that the acceleration of the Model X is still faster than a McLaren F1, a point he said was "nuts."

(Quite frankly, the whole thing is insane, but that's neither here nor there.)

Musk said Tuesday that initial production of the Model S and Model X P100D would be limited due to battery capacity; only about 200 examples will be made each week.
