For the 2013 model year, the Buick Verano (introduced in 2011), is offering buyers an Ecotec 2.0L turbocharged engine with direct injection and continuously variable valve timing that produces an SAE-certified 250 horsepower (187 kW) at 5300 rpm and 260 lb-ft (353 Nm) of torque at 2000 rpm. Acceleration from 0-60 mph is an estimated 6.2 seconds. More than 90% of the Verano Turbo’s peak torque—more than 234 lb-ft—is available between 1700 to 5500 rpm.

Ford’s new 3-cylinder 1-liter EcoBoost ( earlier post ), which made its debut in the European Focus, has been named overall International Engine of the Year 2012. The engine also picked up the awards for New Engine and Sub 1-Litre categories in the annual event. In 2011, Fiat won the top spot with its 875cc Twin Air engine for the Fiat 500. ( Earlier post.).

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is providing $9.6 million for the creation of two new Biomass Crop Assistance Program ( BCAP ) project areas in New York and North Carolina, and the expansion of an already established BCAP project area in Arkansas. The announcement provides the opportunity to expand the use of non-food, energy crops for liquid biofuels and to help meet state mandated Renewal Portfolio Standards (RPS).

Honda has introduced its fuel-saving Idle Stop (start-stop) technology to the Jazz 1.2 i-VTEC in Europe. The Jazz 1.2 SE with Idle Stop delivers a combined fuel economy of 54.3 mpg UK (45.2 mpg US, 5.2 L/100km) and CO 2 emissions of 120 g/km, representing an improvement of 3 g/km. For UK drivers, this drop in CO 2 emissions means the car now sits in tax band C and costs only £30 a year to tax.

Delta Air Lines recently purchased the Phillips 66 Trainer refinery, which is located in the Philadelphia area and had been idle since the fourth quarter of 2011. ( Earlier post.) Delta has indicated that it plans to increase Trainer’s jet fuel yield from 14% to 32%—higher than was previously seen at Trainer and significantly above the average yield of jet fuel in any US refining region, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
